Art of Cooking Day 9 - Cake

Today we had our last day of Art of Cooking: Cake Day. When we came in, we were given a presentation on how we were to cut our cake and subsequently how to add frosting to the cake. We had to cut the top off of the cake and slice the base in half. After, we would slice off the outermost piece of the cake. Then, you would add frosting in between the stacked layers. After we did that, we had to put the cake in the fridge for 30 minutes. After we removed the cake from the fridge, we added another layer of frosting. We did this by adding a second layer at the top, and building a wall of frosting around the side. After that, we would smooth out the frosting around the top and sides. The cakes were then put back into the fridge. After we had lunch, we then added the fondant to our cakes. There were a lot of designs and some people even added images to theirs. Day 5 - Chicken (Patricia A.)

Today was the day we made chicken satay. It was accompanied by a peanut sauce and a mango salad. The day started with the process of marinating the chicken. We used a lot of turmeric in the marinade alongside with various other ingredients such as limes, chili paste, fish oil which smelled less than good, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and coconut milk. W proceeded to save a quarter of a cup of said marinade for later use in the peanut sauce. The peanut sauce was a simple process similar to the chicken marinade. Sayer squeezed a lime for it and that was the highlight of the day. The sauce was constructed through the combination of lime juice, hot water, peanut butter, lime zest, garlic and ginger, soy sauce, and the remaining marinade. Day Two: Exploring Breakfast Food

The goal of today was to explore different types of breakfast food. We learned the proper way to make a couple variations of eggs, including poached, scrambled, sunny side up and a few more. We also made pancakes, potatoes and sausage/bacon. Our head chefs, Jessica and Avril lead us through making all of these dishes. We were able to use some of the knife skills that we learned yesterday when cutting up the potatoes, which means that we can already see the impact of the skills we're learning. Personally, I found today's lessons on food preparation extremely useful, because of how I often I make eggs and pancakes for myself. I am excited to make these dishes at home now that I know the best way to make them. The energy and teamwork in the kitchen is really good to see, and I think it has a big impact on the outcome of the food.
